Tips for Effective Oracle and Tarot Readings

As a Certified Angel Tarot Reader (CATR) and creator of seven oracle card decks, I thought I’d share some of my favorite practical tips for giving card readings. This might especially help newbies.

1) Don't read cards if you are upset. If you expect the worst, you will get the worst. For example, if you are worried something bad will happen, this energy often will be reflected in the cards. You might pull The Tower card and fear that everything will fall apart when that is just your emotional state. It is essential to remain calm and composed, as your energy and outlook can significantly affect the interpretation of the cards.

2) Do clear your cards and yourself before you read. Even if the deck is new. Especially if you just read for someone else. You want to ensure the messages are intended for the person you're reading. I like to meditate before I read cards, and you also can use sage, crystals, music, light language, and more to clear energy. Read more about energy clearing.

3) Don't conduct readings under the influence of alcohol or drugs or read for someone under the influence. This can cause your readings to be inaccurate. It might sound like a no-brainer, but I've seen this happen multiple times when reading at psychic fairs.

4) Do set an intention before you read. I ask the universe (you can ask Source, your guides, your higher power, whatever feels right to you) to make me a clear and open channel to bring forth messages for my client's best and highest good - as well as my own.

5) Don't read for someone who is visibly distressed or makes you uncomfortable. If you get a bad vibe, you can politely decline.
